1. history of privilege

Cultural appropriation is when you actually APPROPRIATE something. Talking about something is not appropriation!!! Do you even know what the word means? If I am actually knowledgable about black hair and give a lecture on it, that is completely different from WEARING fake black hair and pretending to be black. One is

Thank you for putting this so clearly. I just copied this comment for a Facebook post (with attribution). It’s funny, for something I feel so viscerally is WRONG, it’s hard to articulate why you can’t be “transracial.” It really is about the difference between gender and sex. In this case, I guess someone’s racial

I want a reporter to talk to every tan salon owner & hairdresser in Spokane until they find her accomplices. Does she tell her stylist to make her look black? In a small-ish city, how has this info not spread around?

White woman here. This shit makes me angrier than almost anything (other than black people getting killed by cops...). Actually, a black friend on my Facebook wall (who works in politics and is an activist) was defending her as “understanding” the black race!!! #wtf

Thank you! Yes it was basically a business arrangement, but that doesn’t mean that literally ANY treatment was okay! The rest of us demand certain rights and rules in our workplaces, why should Holly and the other girls not have a right to complain about the insane shit that went on in that house? They weren’t even

$1,000/week is not even really that much money. Yes they got free rent and some got cars, but it’s still not an insane amount of money. She isn’t suing him or anything, she’s just telling the story of what happened. Why is that not okay?

Did she say she was a victim? Yes they were in it voluntarily and made money, and got famous. Does that mean that literally ANY treatment by Hef is fair game? If you have a job you chose to work at, and you’re making good money, does that mean your boss can do anything he wants and you have no right to complain about

What’s wrong with prostitutes? I guess it’s fair game to treat them like shit?

I’ve been through three abusive relationships, and I don’t attribute their abuse to a mental illness OR hate. Abuse is its own thing. My abusive husband was later diagnosed with bipolar, which he tried to blame for his behavior. But the other two had no mental illnesses that I could see. I don’t believe that they

Please don’t attribute her behavior to BPD. I have BPD and have been in support groups with others who have it, and none of us would ever do anything even close to that. Anger is often associated with BPD but not everyone has that symptom (I don’t). And anger is completely different from serious abuse like trying to

The fact that it may be “technically” a crime somewhere doesn’t mean that we have to make the victim’s family feel like their dead relative committed a crime.

How does the AP Stylebook “sell papers/magazines”? Is AP Style some titillating way to make stories more enticing? I thought your problem with the AP phrasing about suicide was that it was LESS direct/forceful. In fact, the guidelines says that the AP doesn’t cover suicide attempts except by famous people. As a

Phrasing DOES matter. Think of the difference when a news story says, “The officer discharged his weapon” rather than “the officer shot the man.” The words we use matter in how things are perceived.

Can someone explain to me why anyone would want to switch off regular antiperspirant / deodorant? With that description, it doesn’t sound all that great. Also, you said more wetness at first, and then the smell goes away, does the sweatiness ever go away too? If not, I am not down with that. And I have no idea what

A “friend” of mine is a wedding photographer with her 20-years-older also wedding photog boyfriend, and they are nauseating. Not about “wellness,” but about ultra cutesy EVERYTHING. Her favorite hashtag is #whimsy. Others are (just ripped from her FB wall): #wheremyheartroamsfree #loveyatiltheshopsandback #ellolove

Are you serious? Grey Gardens was one of the most famous and groundbreaking documentaries, ever. So much so that Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange did a movie ABOUT Grey Gardens about 6 years ago, including word-for-word recreations of a lot of the scenes in the original. (Which is one of my favorite movies.)

*"Franny and Zooey"

My bf and I do this with our cat names, and anything about kitties... "Hometown Glory" by Adele becomes "I like it with the kitties where they are so fucking cute" (instead of "I like it in the city..."). When my cat Behe (pronounced Beehee.. it's short for Behemoth)... comes back in from outside, I sing "Behe's back

I eat really slow... like REALLY slow. As long as the food is cold or room temp, I'll take 20 times longer to eat than a normal person would. Especially with yogurt, which is one of my favorite foods. I dip the spoon in backwards, rather than taking a spoonful, the yogurt just coats the spoon. Then I lick it off...
