I have to agree with your #1 conclusion. Since the (D) tent is so huge it’s not a bad thing they picked two that will appeal to the differing make up of the party. That’s not saying one isn’t clearly better (IMO) but I can see the value in the NYT’s dual endorsement.

As a former Splinter centrist...definitely not anti-capitalist...just heavily regulated.
