They’re token votes (Elvis, too), partially from being so huge and well-received critically and looking at the overall BP field, this may have been the worst overall year for movies since 2006, which is how you get those three films in the up-to-10 list.

The first Avatar got a nomination, too, though it was obviously not going to win. Same thing with WoW and Maverick. Those movies got nominated because they made a shit-ton of money and kept theatrical runs alive.

I think part of the stated reason that they can put up as many as 10 best picture nominees is to ensure a few “popular” films make the field, which the producers of the show hope lead to the necessary interest for people to stick with the broadcast.

The one with Tyler Labine? That’s the only one I watched/was aware of.

Biggest crowd eruption in our screening came when Mjolnir flies thru the air and straight into Cap’s hand. People literally jumped out of their seats and started cheering like they were at the Super Bowl. It was perfect.
