Surely “due to faith-based fear of cooties”? They lost to girls by forfeiting, it was playing against them at all that would have made their team unclean in the eyes of the Lord or some such 5th Century BC mumbo jumbo.

I remember Yul Brynner totally nailing the role of the tireless, implacable, android gunslinger.

I love the entirety of that episode. Particularly the ending where Sisko lists all the ways he’s bent and broken his principles, then looks himself in the eye and admits he would do it all over again. It’s a relatively restrained bit of acting from Avery Brooks and better for it.
