Might be worth getting an episode guide and skimming just the better episodes of the earlier seasons. They're not terrible but the writing is nowhere near as tight as it is later.

I don't think it's that difficult to parse. It has to do with people's experience of difference - because that affects whether they take certain claims about certain subjects on trust, or compare them to their own experience and (usually) dismiss them.

It sounds very logical, doesn't it. But maybe check out what these people DO watch on TV before you imagine that they hate watching the rich and famous.

It's hard to guess what can be declared "political" these days. 30 years ago there was a lot more racism, but opposing racism wasn't actually seen as a political position.
