This is getting increasingly ridiculous... but I will just say that if Nia couldn’t transfer the powers over to Maeve, even in the realm of sci-fi, it would make zero sense that they could be transferred through adoption. If that were the case Nia’s mom could’ve just chosen which child to give the powers to.

That’s what I was thinking. But also, in the way, WAY too much reading I’ve done on the fictional planet of Naltor... apparently siblings don’t always even have the same surname, so it’s possible Nura Nal of the Legion isn’t even related to Nia/Maeve at all...

So I am to understand that an expert in the nebulous field of dream interpretation — chock full of symbolism, vagueness, and misleading details —never once considered the possibility that her indistinct vision of a daughter with the powers, could be either daughter?

not sure king b. gave any sign of not appreciating that...but the whole “only one per generation” thing along with the age at which such things manifest suggest that it’s potentially a bit more involved than that level of explanation can provide for...

So... if Nia has the powers, and it passes from mother to daughter... how is Nia going to procreate to pass along the powers? I know it is out of vogue to accept this fact, but you need to be born a certain way, biologically, to become pregnant and give birth.

I’m not talking about gender, I’m talking about biological sex. I’m not talking about societal attitudes or the risks trans people take to live their true lives. I’m just talking about the fact that when you see any mammal with a penis, you can say that mammal is a male.

OK, it’s not a decision, bad choice of words on my part. But a penis is “some male characteristics”? Why does the internal (and at birth, unknowable) brain chemistry take precedence over the overtly physical biology? Why can’t you say someone was born male when they were born with a penis? However the brain and gender

It's telling that even though Nia's family accepted her as a woman (at least her parents if not her sister), it didn't even occur to them that she could be Dreamer. Are they, too, ignorant and transphobic?  Or is it possible the writers did them no favors when crafting this story?

Yes yes fine. Doesn’t explain why nobody in her family perceived her as female enough to be the next rookie for the Naltorian Dreamers.

I like how people get focused on how this magic power works genetically with cis vs trans folks (which is possible but besides the point) but are totally fine with the magical biology of only one person per generation having the power.

I know this isn’t the comics, but if remember my Legion of Superheroes correctly, all Naltorians (or almost all) have the precognition dreaming power, so it’s probably not mystical, and it just seems like a needless complication to make this power a once-a-generation, female power. It’d be like if they made J’onn the

She could easily pass on her genetic material in any number of way without actually going through a pregnancy.

It isn’t. Gender is a human construct.

If they are biological and only women get them, then she wouldn’t regardless of her subjective gender. That’s science.

But a science fiction show should be based in science as well as fiction.  On the Flash, for instance, they explain phasing as excited molecules.  On this show, Kara's powers are described like a solar battery.  When they use terms like matrilneal line, they imply the powers are genetic in nature.  Even a fantasy show

Especially when, in the comics, virtually every person on Dreamer’s planet has powers, both male and female. The writers of the show changed that to make a political point.

I sincerely hope you don’t ignore this just because I’m grey.

Interesting that Alex would have been a MAGA type, at least a little, without the formative influence of Kara directly in her life. I’m surprised the show is willing to say that about Alex, but I want to see what happens next.

Yes, especially the hulk like after-effects.

I deeply enjoyed Kara’s resigned, “well fuck, I guess I have to tell Nia the truth” and then her thought process of “how do I demonstrate that i’m Supergirl? Lift the car, fly, set something on fire?  Tkae off my glasses and fly, worked for Winn
