Imagine coming on a motoring enthusiast website and posting about how ridiculous it is for someone to own a vehicle for more than 30 years

The 3-liter M54 Z3 is the best - effectively as quick as the S52 M version without the badge premium (most of the time).

Is it an auto trans? Boy, that fill plug is a son of a gun to break loose the first time.

How’d you pull the piston? I find a little compressed air in the brake hose fitting (with a wood block to act as a stopper) and the pistons usually shoot right on outta there. Rock Auto actually carries E46 caliper pistons if yours has any putting/corrosion.

I guess this gives more reason to drop the money for Motor Trend streaming. I really enjoyed a few of their YouTube shows but going from $0 to $60/yr meant I just punted on watching.

Yep, my E46 has a mini drum brake setup with shoes mounted to the backing plate, using the inner surface of the rotor hat as the drum. Read more

Tire Rack does really good video and detailed text reviews of tires as they come out. They really liked the General G-Max As-05 (I think it’s 05) for being nice and sporty - main downside was that there’s some tread noise present. They’re made in the USA and currently have a $70 rebate (I, too, am presently tire Read more

With the caveat that my knowledge is not exhaustive: not sure why you’d replace all the lifters. BMW sixes get a little tappy from the lifters from time to time, but it’s often just a need for a bleed (run engine at medium rpm for a couple minutes, no load) to get air out of the lifters. If there had been lifter Read more

That one looks very nice for the mileage. If it’s truly a 2002, no SULEV - the M56 was only offered from ‘03 up. If you can get the VIN, mdecoder.com will give you a full breakdown of factory options (and show M54 or M56). Read more

Look at that: the Arizona one is an M56 car. Note the funky vanity cover compared to most E46.

E46 touring fun-fact: the touring has more rear leg room than the sedan even though they’re the same underneath, because the rear seat was pushed backwards slightly. One of those little details that would never happen on a modern car because it would save a couple grand on development. Read more

You drove with dirthead Fred? Cool! I used to really enjoy his show until motor trend out it behind a paywall

Went three months carless before I found my E46 touring. That said, there’s a fair amount floating around if (a) you’re willing to travel to get the correct one and (b) if you want a manual, you’re ok with waiting a long time and paying a premium or converting an auto car.

Overcast is the best light for shootin’ outdoors. The wagon seems to have been shot in bright sunlight, which is a lot harsher

You know you’ve got a bmw problem when you look at the impossible-to-find turbo inline six, manual trans station wagon and your first thought is “man, why no sport package?” Read more
