It’s so weird that they built him up as a paragon of something or other and then... decided to do nothing with the character.

I think it’s implied that Thawne went back multiple times and caused some sort of ripple effect, but as is usually the case with this show, they don’t bother to actually explain anything, leaving us to speculate.
