You know Gaetz and his faction can keep repeating this removal procedure, don’t you? Each time the new Speaker will be to the right of the one before. At what point do Democrats decide voting “present” would be more prudent than collaborating with Gaetz’s shenanigans? Do they wait until the exhumed corpse of Benito

You’re rationalizing. Not one Democrat needed to vote for McCarthy to prevent his removal. All that was needed was for 7 Democrats to vote “present” — then the removal vote would’ve been 209 for and 210 against. McCarthy would still be Speaker today.

Pffft. The vote to remove McCarthy was 216 to 210. Democrats supplied 208 of the votes for removal, the Gaetz faction supplied 8. Which means 97% of the votes for removal were supplied by Democrats.

Matt Gaetz: Hey Democrats! Kevin McCarthy is not conservative enough a Speaker of the House for my liking. Will you help me oust him so I can replace him with someone further to the right?

Stop.

You only call me a troll because you still believe I wrote all those Crystal Jewell posts. The truth is Laura Bassett created Crystal Jewell to generate reader engagement, so please stop. Besides, Crystal mixed in some really insightful social commentary with her tomfoolery. No harm was done, and we all learned a

Lack of ethics in politics is a BIG problem and it afflicts both the Left and the Right.

I feel bad for all the American girls who wear lifts to emulate their favorite tennis players Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina, both of whom are 6 feet tall. These brave American tennis girls deserve to grow and be tall instead of crying at night and using lifts to pretend to be tall. But how many will ever achieve

Congressman Adam Schiff dishing some top-shelf snark on Steve Garvey this morning. This is the caliber of snark I once expected from G/O Group writers and commenters but rarely see anymore. Sad.

Letting actuaries from big corporate insurance companies decide who can serve the American people in Congress is not my idea of democracy.

No, it isn’t.

Well shit. I was one of those who argued Sen. Feinstein was on the mend after a bout of shingles and it was sexist to demand she resign. I’ll eat some crow and admit she may actually have had significant health issues.

I understand your fears because I once shared them. Back in January I told my conservative friends they were fools to believe McCarthy wasn’t a weakling who would be a puppet to the more assertive Trumpists in his caucus such as Gaetz and Boebert and Greene.

Speaker McCarthy keeps exceeding my expectations. I thought he’d be a wishy-washy figurehead, not a real leader; instead he’s turned out to be a fearless and skillful opponent of Trumpism. Again and again he has stared Trumpist bullies like Matt Gaetz and Marjorie Taylor Greene straight in the eye and told them to go

Darn, the Roots comments are invisible now. I had to refresh the page 20 times to get them back and now I can’t get them no matter what. If you have the patience to refresh the page a whole lot maybe you can see the Root comments. Or maybe not. Maybe I just got lucky.

Maybe your browser is glitching. Try Firefox. The Root comments display fine in Firefox. I’m looking at them right now.

There’s nothing wrong with the Root comment sections. Maybe they could use some more regular commenters.

Let’s be real. There are very few Republicans who genuinely want to pass extremist anti-abortion legislation, especially not with an election coming. Hence they’ve designated a few moderate Republicans to play the villain and block passage.  The Democratic Party plays this game too. Democrats routinely pretend to

A Jet going down on 9/11 is a little too on the nose, universe.

Nice comment, but it belongs at Deadspin. Somebody should post it there.
