I’m pretty sure it’s understood that many Academy members don’t watch all the movies for consideration, or even most of them. It’s a bit of a snowball effect - a role will have a good narrative that people like to get behind (like Stallone), it’ll be on many critics’ end of year lists, they’ll be a LOT of politicking…

That’s basically what production companies do - all of them, from Plan B to the Weinsteins. This isn’t specific to Will Smith but largely how the business is run.
