True. The ships are a evolution of form. Much more realistic. Also, surprising for a series known to feature a ton of characters and vehicles for merchandising.

Starkiller was designed and built by the first order. They have many Resurgent class Star Destoyers although we see only one.

There were tons of exotic ship designs for TFA. It was intentional that they stayed with the original designs.

The First Order ships are state of the art and actually illegal by republic law. They are supposedly superior to the the new republic T-85 X-wings and a decade or so ahead of the T-70's used by the resistance. Pilot skill seems to have won the day in TFA.

The drama would likely come from establishing the power of a villain that takes him down after he is shown to be that powerful.

And it would likely also set him up to die (later) as well. If he’s shown as be as powerful as he should be, his fall would be the “Empire strikes back” moment of the new trilogy. Making whomever (or whomever’s) that took him down that much more threatening towards the new heroes. A plot device I kind of expect to…
