IMHO, kids have always done silly crap like drinking detergent, and tried to find an audience. The difference today is the ease of finding said audience, and how this has led to more kids doing sillier crap.

Of course you can plug things in next to each other. The sockets are sized according to the plug. the power strips are just bigger..

Digression, but US style outlets seem to be one of the least safe design to me. The prongs will be “live” even when halfway out. Also the plugs aren’t very securely seated, especially in older outlets.

At a guess, the mood was similar to pilots watching Top Gun, air traffic controllers watching Pushing Tin, race drivers watching Days of Thunder. Lots of laughter at inaccuracies but nevertheless enjoyment of the movie.
