Elsewhere in these comment, people are lambasting Horizon Zero Dawn, but this is how I generally feel about Botw, while I loved HZD. I enjoy the meandering, and the world is beautiful in a very Nintendo way. But the stories share so many threads (with Botw being much weaker) that I can’t figure out why I should care.
Let me state for the record that I love Last of Us. Pumped for v2. Never caught onto Uncharted. Both have the same core weaknesses and Uncharted shares none of the strengths - namely, a great story with relatable and emotionally compelling characters.
A good story covers up for a lot of game play ills. If this game were the equivalent of “Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture” but with branching scenarios, it’s an instant classic. That game was boring as hell to control, but the story carried me through the mundane act of navigating, thinking about it as I moved from one…
I think the Switch has informed me that while great graphics are really cool and stunning, there are multiple facets that make a video game great that just aren’t about visuals.
