The European Union has given me a lot of things. It’s helped my country build itself into a strong and liberal first world nation, it’s given me a sense of identity and belonging across the continent and today it killed the horrible auto-play video on the Gizmodo Media sites.

At Gizmodo, we’ve temporarily blocked all ads for visitors accessing the site from Europe. And we geo-blocked all videos for the EU market as well to prevent showing ads that run at the beginning of our videos.

Can we keep the non auto-playing videos? Seriously, those are the worst - and they even start up by themselves on mobile.

This is what it looks like if you try to watch a video ad on Gizmodo from the EU now.

Legitimate interests have been defined as personal data handling/processes requirements since 1995, there should be sufficient precedent spread out over 23 years.

You need better lawyers, ours have read the documentation and very clearly informed us what we need to do to be compliant

My understanding—please correct me if I’m wrong—isn’t that the GDPR takes effect this week, but that the actual enforcement begins this week. Pretty sure GDPR has been in effect for some time now, just without the enforcement mechanism.
