At the Castle Gate right after the horse boss is a trio of guys with hats - the Rats the Tengu of Ashina has you kill. Killing them nets you a nice bit of cash, experience, as well as pellets and upgrading materials. I’d grind there.

I’m unsure on that. Dark Souls allowed you to upgrade defense with new equipment and certain stat boosts. As far as I can tell Sekiro allows you to buff your HP permanently in larger chunks at a time, but the only way to increase defense may be through a skill tree (Haven’t check) or by eating sugar for a temporary…

Definitely less forgiving, and I love/ hate that. I dig the stealth mechanics, I tend to hate the bosses that don’t allow them to be employed. 

It’s Dark Souls/ Bloodborne style level design and combat brutality with stealth mechanics added in. There’s NPC quests, there’s many bosses, there is a lot of dying. Progress is only as slow as the height of the brick wall you run into.
