This whole laser thing seems pretty simple to counter (from a stop-it-from-heating-up-something-and-destroying-it aspect). Just use a covering of the same neat stuff that covers (covered) the space shuttle fleet (it sheds heat like a politician deflects ethics questions) and cover that with something shiny.

I think they did it in hopes of keeping other phones out of the building. It would be detrimental to company morale to see people on the Windows 7 Phone project using Android-based phones or iPhones at work.
