I think that’s true, about the optimism. Ta-nehisi Coates’ “My President Was Black” is fantastic if you haven’t read it, and the optimism is brought up in that as a double edged sword.

not to wade into this, but I would argue that everyone is racist, and the more we point it out and realize it the better we all are. I’m a liberal as they come and still have to challenge certain thought patterns that have been ingrained on me from my not so liberal father and by society at large.
