There needs to be consequences for racists or people that silently condone racism. Or there will never be change! There needs to be social, cultural consequences. Right now people can be racist and sexist with impunity. No more staying silent.

I very much appreciate your comment. I’m unhappy to see so much “we are absolutely in the right and the only rational people in America” on this site. None of us can really know what motivated people to vote Trump. I live in a (truly horrible ) capital city, and if you want to keep your job you really have to do

I deleted two, maybe three people before hesitating. I’m also burnt out, and am struggling for words, but I don’t know what else to do but keep trying to reason with them.

Thanks. I needed to hear that. On one hand I want to be a good ally for my friends who will be even more negatively affected by Trump’s presidency than I am. On the other I am also tired of educating hateful selfish people.

I understand. It’s not easy for everyone. I had unfriended a third of the people anyway. :)

I deleted my Facebook account today.

To be honest, I’m in the same boat, and I deleted without a hint of remorse. These people aren’t worth my time or energy, nor are they worth yours: all of us are much better off focusing on helping those we can, protecting those we can’t, and making sure that those we can neither help nor protect from themselves

Thank you for the open thread and the amazing coverage.

I started getting mocked for being gay in the second grade, before I even knew what “gay” was. To cope, I learned

I think the hope is that he will quickly realize that he is out of his league and will cede most of the actual governing to Pence and his advisors - who will not be good by any means, but at least they’re politicians who are unlikely to nuke Europe or something like that. The campaign trail is a circus - and Trump is

Yes. This is the bargaining stage. You called it. Trump’s gotta’ Trump. There will be no pivot. Hasn’t been. Won’t be.

I have heard quite a few people express the hope today that trump will become less abhorrent after the inauguration and he was just putting on an act to get elected. Is this bargaining stage of the five stages of grief?

I feel worse for her than I do for myself— she worked her whole LIFE to get here, and having it snatched away at the last minute like that? Your life’s dreams, stepped on by the incarnation of everything that has been holding you back and abusing you for thirty years? Groooooan. I want to go have a beer with her right

This was a great post, but not entirely accurate.

I’m a white lady of reproductive age, so I worry a little bit for myself, but truly, I’m lucky, and I am so filled with rage and anger for my trans friends, my gay friends, my friends who are going to lose their health insurance, my immigrant friends, my minority friends... There are so, so many people whose lives are

She did get a little teary. And that’s OK. She’s human, contrary to what many people unfortunately believe.

I think *everyone* has a lot to worry about with this. I’m frightened about the rolling back of social progress, but I’m even more white-knuckle terrified about the fact that with all three branches of government under Republican control, they may legitimately dismantle the EPA or start a nuclear war.

If you’re a working/middle class person you also have much to lose. Trump is and always has been for Trump. His tax laws will further burden the middle class and relieve his own taxes. Everyone loses, except Trump.

Not for nothing. She is the first female candidate of a major political party. No one can ever take that away from her.
