Gosh, this is what I'd call a first world problem. It shouldn't take more than a few minutes to reboot, and you shouldn't need to do it more than once every 2 weeks or so.
Yeah, I was actually going to say that if you want desktop data than RainMeter may be the way to go. I set it up a couple years ago and I don't remember it being too hard. There was some notepad editing, but it was mostly just changing values rather than writing your own code.
