When I was about 8 years old, my parents informed me that my uncle, my dad’s brother, was gay. This is about 1983. My dad’s family had some ‘traditional’ leanings, but on my mom’s side, it helped a lot that she already liked him above anyone else on my father’s side of the family.

I loved this movie when it came out, I bought it on DVD, and for years people ripped on it way more than it deserved. It’s so empathetic, and the mechas are extensions of humanity: they have to do what they do and feel it. At least a real human has the chance to move on with their lives, but the mechas are frozen

That Captain America movie! I’ve never seen it, but as a massive fanboy reading Comics Scene (Fangoria for comics c. 1991) and soon after Wizard, I was waiting forever for that movie (and soon after Corman’s Fantastic Four). It looks pretty bad, and though I would have watched it, I don’t think I would have liked it.

I don’t reply to the Root often. Straight white man here, easier to read the site than to put my two cents in most of the time. I write stories/essays lots, and want to comment more on race issues, but I know how woke you need to be as a straight white guy to thread that needle.

I took a slightly less drastic approach: I unfollowed everything for weeks, except my family, and especially all advertising. My news feed shows me a few things then says there’s nothing more to show. If stuff pops up again, I unfollow it. Friends can contact me if they want, my parents can communicate with me, but

The real story is that Sushiro is mediocre and not deserving of being a national chain. I’ve been to a lot of kaitenzushi places, and in 15 years in Japan, Sushiro was by far the worst. Average food, and a poor selection. But yeah, don’t stick your camera on the conveyor belt.

How about Glenn Howerton’s writing on the chalkboard? The man has a steady hand. I teach, and write on a blackboard two hours a day, and my writing isn’t half as neat. He must have some artistic talents in him.

I watched it opening Friday, and went back again the following Friday. It helped that I was a 22 year old stoner.

What a prick.

I got my degree in Art History, and I totally know why I didn’t get a great job, it’s even a running joke in my life (I graduated in 1999).
