I think you have to take into account several things:

1. What is the average age of irrational fanbois and -girls. I myself used to be very intense about whatever artist or music style I like between my 14-20.

I think Netflix wanted to get away from the “required” horrible ending. You can tell a satirical or critical tale on technology and life without having to dump your character is hell and/or making the viewer feel like shit.
