My theory:
Shelby is the survivor . Not only that, she's a witch, Scatach, in present form or there to protect her.
Shelby sees real Matt 'getting nasty' with Scatach in the basement after being woken by Dominic. Scatach leaves, Shelby bludgeons Matt (after being hatcheted herself?)

And if it had been this type of awful horror for 6 seasons , it wouldn't have made it to 6 seasons. I will give the writers credit & say the season is pure satire.
Character development is why I personally loved AHS. Sometimes it disn't work . But when it did? Brillance.
