as brilliant as Gandhi is, the scene where Ian McShane stares down Winstone is witheringly scary. The small smile, the piercing eyes... brrrrr

Cagney is astonishing in this. His intensity is 20 years ahead of his time - it feels more like early Nicholson. All the other actors look like showroom dummies.

You couldn’t make a movie like Blazing Saddles in today’s climate? Got news for you: they barely made Blazing Saddles in 1974 - go back and read some of the commentary in the day. Decent people didn’t go to see movies like that.
