I also disliked the movie, but I confess I didn't notice most of the things people mention when they talk about how good it is. Rather than sit through it again, I just accept that it was important to others but not to me. I do remember hating the way the characters reduced men and women to onnoxios stereotypes.

I used to watch White Shadow, but I can't remember anything about it, except that the guy coached a basketball team and one of the players got shot. I don't really see the parallel with the West family.

No mention of the Dickies soundtrack? I don't remember how much overlap there is between the album and the actual soundtrack (I doubt they played Jim Bowie at any point in the movie), but the title song rocks.

I kind of get it. Reflection on the loss has caused a flood of compassion which makes his terrible attitude impossible to ignore.
