Exactly. Unlike some in the UK, I was never particularly on the Canonise-Captain-Tom train (not because I had anything against him, I just never paid much attention) - but...like... what the fuck? He was just, some nice old man who walked up and down in his garden and raised some money, what the fuck did he do to you?…
Activists: There’s more IMPORTANT things in this world than art!
I just don’t understand the targets. Find the addresses of oil executives or shipping guys or their top offices and make trouble there. They are probably much less nice but you shouldn’t attack innocent targets because they are easier. Like pour oil on the steps of Parliament or whatever
Very similar to the “protestor” who recently poured a tank of human excrement over a memorial to Tom Moore (a.k.a. Captain Tom - an old man who raised a load of money for the NHS during lockdown and who died last year) in protest at private jets.
Yeah, this is no different than me walking down the street smashing car windows & yelling “Why don’t you people care about homelessness?”
The painting, luckily, was covered by a protective glass panel, and only the frame sustained minimal damage.
I was expecting a mention of Duchamp’s Fountain, a Dadaist work that is literally just a urinal laying on its side--meant to address the whole “what is art” question. A bunch of people have peed in it, and one guy attacked with with a hammer. All claim that Duchamp himself would have approved, so it’s not technically…
On top of all that, sunflower oil may very well have a smaller environmental footprint than canned tomato soup.
Concept: Art critique of art vandalism is 100% gold.
“Are you more concerned about the protection of a painting or the protection of our planet and people?”
Throwing soup on a beloved artist’s painting is going to make exactly zero people think about your unrelated cause, let alone by sympathetic to it.
I wonder if Harry is dialling it back because he doesn’t actually want to destroy the monarchy itself. He knew that Lizzie was popular enough to take a bit of smack talk and have the institution survive, but Chuck? Chuck’s position is a lot more fragile and a lot less popular, and it wouldn’t take all that much to…
Basic rule of thumb: If you’re going to talk on the record about someone in their 90's, you should be pretty prepared for the possibility those words will soon apply to a dead person, for better or worse.
Oof, who could have predicted Donald Trump might be a disloyal ally?
Yeah, if you have to spell a name weirdly to make it “different” - it isn’t different! Just give them a different name. My granddaughter’s name is Pebble. It’s a family name with a very interesting history. It’s a little odd, but easy to spell and unique enough so that she won’t have anyone else in her class with the…
A friend of mine had a daughter last month. Ethel Hazel Agatha LastName.
I was in a similar boat. When that first slate of Star Wars announcements was made, my reactions ranged from ‘sounds good’ to ‘we’ll see’, but Andor was the only one that I straight up doubted and thought “really?” And I say that as someone who greatly enjoyed Rogue One.
Andor has gone from the name that I didn’t really care about on that big MCU-style Star Wars Wall-O-Announcements screen to now the guiding light for every major Star Wars project going forward.
I believe this season is 12 episodes, so we are halfway there with six more to go and then an additional 12 episodes in season 2. Truly a bounty of riches!
