The only method of defeating this that I've seen work with moderate success is to place a 1-gallon freezer bag over the filter before removing it. With that in place, 95% of the oil will be contained to the bag, but some will still manage to get all over the crossmember.

The best part is that the filter is DIRECTLY above the CV boot and the crossmember. Removing a filter means that dirty oil will pour out on the boot/crossmember, and then drip down along every surface. It will eventually stream/drip off the crossmember, but nowhere near the oil pan you have carefully placed under the
