Cast was amazing, it's damn shame Werner Herzog doesn't do more acting. The story was really good too, but I ended up disliking the main character. It's the same as with Jack Ryan and other superhuman wish fulfillment protagonists.

Watch DS9. The Federation could very well be the most interesting power in trek. The problem was that Roddenberry primarily forbade it from being portrayed as anything less-than perfect. DS9 has no such issue, and actually does an amazing job of exploring a lot of stuff politically

Two things here, and number two is important:

Robots, aliens or clones; whatever is on the forefront of questioning what is that makes us human, people will react with fear and anger. We still create borders based on the pettiest of differences between members of the same species, so intelligent life from outside that small circle is most definitely going to have

Interesting to note that the authors of both the Mass Effect and Halo series saw this distinction. There are "smart" vehicles and autonomous weapons systems or tour guides - but they were a world away from the sophistication of true sentience.
