While I’ve heard all these arguments before, I’ve never had problems with under mounted spares. My experience is 2 rear carry (rav4 and Rodeo) 1 inside (xj) and 1 underneath (land cruiser) and my favorite by far (and the one thats seen the most abuse) has been the cruiser. yes, the 4.7 needs belts, but other than that its a bombproof engine.

yup. Thats the one bummer of the 3rd gen...belts. The 1gr-fe uses chains and eliminates that issue.

Get a 4runner, and I say this as a 80 series Land Cruiser Owner. Land Cruisers are wonderful machines and mechanically sound for many MANY miles...but the 4runner will be less painful on the wallet to maintain as a part-time adventure rig by virtue of lighter, cheaper parts. 3rd gen 4runner. It will go anywhere and probably never break. Perfect size to be totally easy to maneuver in a city, and fit everything you need to camp for a weekend.
