$200 doesn’t strike me as punitive. High but not punitive. Quick calculation shows that if I lived in TX instead of AZ I’d be paying around $130 in state gas taxes a year. (plus the sales tax that is built into the gas price.) Add in another 120 in Fed gas taxes.

It’s hard to make chargers profitable as a standalone service, given that most folks can home-charge in their garage. I think Ford and their ilk should just take a note from Tesla and create a vertically integrated charging network - and then negotiate a deal with Tesla to swap access as needed.

Unfortunately, the response to this is going to be regulations that prevent companies from raising prices. Even ultra-conservative “free market” types seem to want the government to step in with price caps.
