I don't know about your neck of the woods, but most of the big bookstores in my area are gone and all that's left are the indies and a minor (but good) chain (Half Price Books). Within 10 miles of where I grew up there's one B&N left. There used to be, oh, two B&Ns and a Borders and a Waldenbooks and a Joseph-Beth.
