So my response to this is that, like a lot of things that are deemed impolite, I don’t believe that they are overall good.

I mean, if it makes a solid old fashioned I’m not super into the whole story and mystique thing.  Like, I just want a tasty beverage and a buzz.  Let’s do this!

The whole case of virtue signaling is bullshit. People do stuff to feel good about themselves for the most part. Always have.
