The point you’re making, well, is that parents grew ashamed of making their babies cringe. Why? The kids seem unchanged, generation over generation.

I once accepted an invite and watched the host eat an entire beef roast after I had taken a polite slice. He offered it to me first, so I guessed his nature was to assume I didn’t want more or I would have taken it. Maybe he had ten siblings and he grew up knowing his first chance at the trough was also his last.
If they’re nice my guess is that the first couple showed up unannounced, and the logistics that followed weren’t tenable because everybody got fed until the food ran out. Either that or the hosts got the date confused and didn’t want to admit it.
