Well, before relatively recent times, thinking the mentally ill were possessed was very much a real world trope by "doctors" too.

That accent was straight out of FUBAR, if you've ever seen that. I must have missed the part where they mentioned Tony was from the States. I'd definitely agree she was going for a Canadian rural dude sort of vibe.
Well, what is the AV Club for, if not to talk out of your ass and over-analyze pop culture? That's pretty much why I'm here, anyway.
It might just be as straightforward as Mina psychically reaching out to her loved ones. But I think the Africa stuff has something to do with it, because they keep bringing it up.
Fantasy-Action apples to Gothic Horror oranges.
…joined the Drak Pack?
Just rewatched it and I think your reading of it is on the right track, especially in relationship to Vanessa's pledge to kill Mina if necessary: Malcolm is willing to die to save Mina,Vanessa is willing to kill Mina to save her.
I think that's the first time. I was doing a bit of multi-tasking during that scene and was looking elsewhere at that moment. I totally did this cartoonish double-take at the screen when I heard the slur - wasn't quite sure I'd heard that correctly.
Hmm. I love Dalton in this show and really don't want him to leave it after S1, but I can see him not wanting to sign a years-long contract too. If that's the case, here's to hoping it takes them several years to save Mina.
Maybe. But mistaking possession as mental illness is a pretty common horror trope, so it doesn't surprise me to see it played out that way here. Maybe it's unavoidable - a human body housing an entity that just doesn't belong in that shell?
So, I'm probably off base but here's some thoughts that have been rolling around my head. Vanessa seems to be possessed, albeit in seeming remission. Malcolm has some sort of relationship with a demon/entity as well, although that's pretty unclear at this point.
I feel like I've got a basic handle on the back story now. Lay your burdens on us; we'll help you sort it out. Or maybe we'll just confuse you more - no promises.
I was mildly confused by this scene. Was Vanessa having sex with the demon in the Malcolm suit, who was invisible to the mother? That's how I interpreted it, and though her mother died from either the shock of witnessing it, and/or maybe by the proximity to the devil/demon/being.
I was surprised about Peter too. From the seance, it really felt like Old Man Murray took his young son to Africa.
I think it may have been a mix of both, but her emotions seem so stunted that the worry is probably mild and like multigriffen suggests, has a significant dose of self-interest/narcissism. But she did just recently lose the cylon boyfriend/subordinate, so that might be fresh in her mind too?
I honestly don't remember about Gabriel's sex in Constantine, and am not keen to watch it again so I'm good with living with the uncertainty. I'd happily buy that Gabriel was either male or female (or both) in that movie.
Orlando, the first half. Pretty sure she was a male angel in that shitbag of a Constantine movie, too.
Yeah, it's the "That's My Dog" episode referred to in Todd's write up, above.
Agreeing with a couple people upthread who mentioned he will likely find her dead in the street and bring her to Victor. I'm hoping that's the case anyway as I don't really want him to murder his chosen bride, be it her or whomever else.
She can't have that much longer to live so if they want to keep her around it seems likely. Plus, her hair is pretty much made for it.
