I just meant in the context of the Civil War and the Reconstruction/reconciliation process. Sure, he was an abolitionist. But he was first and foremost a politician. And as a politician, he would have probably dealt with Reconstruction in the same manner.

I agree with most of this. In a few other posts I mention that it was a noble thing. And a lot of what you’ve said here I said in posts the OP dismissed. Like for example, the draft that waited in his desk drawer for some time.
