During that and the wedding, my wife kept looking at each other and saying “we are those stupid people who get killed in the cold open of the horror movie.”

Again, studies costs for all municipal services go up once cities lose their newspaper. Even if you don’t read them, newspapers benefit you and you pay the price when they go away.

I don’t think the argument’s going to sway anyone, but just something to remember a few years from now when you’re paying more for a lot

If this movie actually looks like a Gorey picture (think of the original Masterpiece Mystery animated opening based on his art), I will be there, opening day, dressed all in black.

I have a relative who lives in Singapore, and loves it, and gives to American Democratic causes, but never seems to engage with the fact that she raves about a regime that limits local press’ ability to discuss local politics, routinely evicts people from their housing “for their own good” so that it can create bigger

Boralus is the second city in the game, after Suramar, that feels like an actual place. There are whole neighborhoods that aren’t about what adventurers need. I can totally see wanting to spend time in one of the quieter cafes off the main drag while I’m waiting on a raid, or whatever, which never really worked in

I haven’t finished both sides’ zones yet, but Drustvar is on track to being the best zone in WoW to date. They go dark with such great relish that I started to wonder if they had kidnapped the Darkest Dungeon team at some point. So good.

Remember that when suddenly your city has no money for any services, including road paving, and there’s no one left to explain why except for that guy on your neighborhood Facebook group who insists everything, from bad weather to what’s happening in Washington is the fault of “the illegals.”

The irony is they’ve been advertising for great positions in a great city, but most people aren’t willing to walk into that particular lion’s den.

The ecosystem that provides you that news is built on newspapers. They are the krill of the news ecosystem.

NPR is much less government-funded than the hysteria around them getting defunded ever lets on.

The good news is they don’t have print revenue to lose. The bad news is that they’re still relying on the thousandths of a penny that Google and Facebook are leaving for them in the online ad market. Here’s hoping they can make it work, though, since we certainly need them.

He was quite good in Jumanji. Although the movie was stolen by the acting -- no, seriously -- of Jack Black.

I’m not sure how many of those exist. The local publications I’m aware of, which is more than is probably reasonable, all are plugging away, trying to keep an eye on all their local scoundrels, even as their staffing levels drop with their ad revenue.

I’m not sure there’s a legal argument for splitting Google and Facebook up from their primary sources of revenue. It certainly would benefit the public good, but that doesn’t seem to be the current playbook that we’re using.

And The Athletic has a ton of talent and is grabbing more each day. Their real problem is

Toys R Us was definitely in better shape than the newspaper industry. The leveraged buyout there was definitely its cause of death, rather than the secondary complication it is for many newspapers.

Very little of the costs involved in creating news are tied up with the print product, and traditionally. You going digital only doesn’t save them much at all and them discounting digital-only subscriptions would just be them shooting themselves in the other foot.

Jesus, $11.50/hour? I don’t know what state you’re in, but that’s insanely low for even a starting job in the newspaper industry.

That said, you won’t ever have the nicest car at the high school reunion and you likely won’t be buying a house without a spouse who makes more than you do. Stay in this job if the mission

I dunno. Are you someone who wants to bribe your local city council into accepting your substandard contract for services without the public knowing about it?

Or it’s a cryptocurrency scheme with a unique marketing hook and desperate journalists putting aside credibility and hoping that these beans really are magic.

Except those other things went extinct with a clear successor in place to carry on their services.

Which service is going to cover your local city council and school board and keep them accountable to the voters and taxpayers?
