“If you buy a rubbish car, what you are saying is: ‘I have no interest in cars.’ If you have no interest in cars, you have no interest in driving. And if you have no interest in something, it means you are no good at it, which means you must have your driver’s license taken away.” -Jeremy Clarkson, TG 13x07

Original/real GT40 is even smaller. Tiny in person. And even more amazing as a result

Agreed and understood, but at those speeds perhaps it should be considered one from a safety equipment standpoint?!?

By roadracing standards, during which they would go way slower than 195mph by the way, this is a halfassed level of safety equipment. Where’s the full cage with nets and containment seats and fire suits and HANS devices and gloves/shoes/etc? However, by HPDE/road course “track day bro” standards they already have way

So what you’re implying is that racetracks may be dangerous if you aren’t trained/experienced/skilled, and/or aren’t using commonly available safety equipment designed for use on racetracks? Unpossible

Actually, hundreds of “road course clubs” would happily take someone’s money with this halfassed level of safety equipment, so they could “race” at the “track day” “bro”... as long as the car passes basic safety tech (that stock street cars usually pass)

I thought it had tons (err, “tonnes”) of potential. I also thought the worst thing about it was the shouty ginger Chris Evans.

Is it any different from the UK version that came out a couple years ago? Do I need to pre-order is what I’m trying to figure out, or have I basically already read it. This is the older one, http://www.amazon.com/How-Drive-Ulti… . Thanks for any info

Is this new book any different from the UK version that came out a couple years ago?

No, it just gives you a lot more metal to hit your head against in a crash...

Further bolstering my point that going fast is difficult - if a pro can make that mistake, any of us would’ve been into a wall much much sooner :-)

Plus I’m hearing there are some lovely discounts on the new ones. Sucks for those of us who paid full price a year ago for a mk7 GTI, but so be it :-)

I’d like to be all “hahaha omg lol rich noob can’t drive” but the truth of the matter is that a) it’s a very fast car, all of which are inherently difficult and complicated to go fast in; and b) it’s a particularly tricky section of racetrack and being a road course it was already inherently difficult and complicated

Pedantic I know, but this is not how it went:

For what they charge to rent the place for a track day, I’m surprised anyone rents it at all...

Lil’ typo there. Andy Wilman, not “Any” Wilman

Unfortunate re: weight, but not surprising. I think maybe the 128i was the last “light and nimble” (relatively speaking) US-spec BMW?

The most nonsensical BS I’ve ever heard doesn’t even have to do with one mechanical part. It has to do with all of ‘em, and the need for more, before ever entering an autocross or HPDE. As in, “I can’t run my car until I get better tires and brakes and a bigger turbo and a diff” and a hundred other excuses. Apparently

Nurburg is the small town with the track in question. Nuremberg is a much bigger city about 400km away, where they tried the Nazis...
