Actually, oxygen is what allows the fuel to burn, methane being the fuel. You need some kind of spark to ignite the methane.

It reminds me of the episode from Star Trek TOS where they visit a planet where no one dies and overpopulation literally has people wall to wall. They abduct Kirk so that he can pass on a disease that he is immune to but which would help trim the population of the planet.
