CO-sign. As a relatively youngster, that show seemed like the TV equivalent of something from the far left dial at the time and I totally dug it. It was something of a forerunner to many of the critically beloved comedies of today in a lot of ways.

I get your point about Clooney in 'O Brother' however I fell like this part came early enough in Clooney's career as a bonafide superstar (more of a big TV name prior) that he was able to win me over quickly with his performance. I quite like that movie personally & think Clooney might be the best part of it.

The music itself aside, beginning with this LP imo, REM's album covers became almost laughably bad. So startlingly generic and such products of the time in which they were recorded. I almost wonder if it was something of an inside joke among the troika of Stipe/Mills/Buck..
