Great post. There is definitely a difference between a single person’s every day personal choices, and those needed to be part of a functioing a society.

I am familiar with that argument, and do not agree with it. Yes, it’s neurochemical but one can choose pain over pleasure. It’s an active choice. I guess you could say that the choice I describe above itself brings pleasure in some martyr-ific way, but I believe in free will.

Why not just do Edwin Drood? That is a mystery, without fake cop stuff.

Yes. I rarely have time to actually read, but listen voraciously to audio books via Audible. I typically listen to 2 or 3 at a time, for various parts of the day (one for work/commute, one for chores, one for falling asleep).

It took me years of picking it up and putting it down to get through that, but it was worth it.
