I often forget other states look at that and care. When I see some of the scary heaps on the road here I sometimes wish we did too. If it moves under its own power it is closes enough to road legal.

Airplanes have a lot of redundancy for safety and is nothing out of the ordinary. If it is a flight critical system an aircraft will require at least one redundant system for flight. What failed, from a design/engineering standpoint, sounds like a controls problem.
