Actually, that's just for TVs with active glasses. TVs with passive glasses have every other line polarized to one side, so you get an effective resolution of 1920x540, which is vertically stretched to a 16:9 aspect ratio.

This is not true for all 3d tv's...a great many of them only show half resolution per eye.
