I'm surprised. That statistic has been fairly well publicized.

The thought that there are some 'sketchy people' who one can easily identify as rapists is an easily debunked myth.

Except that most of his stories are based on Vaachs's real life experiences as an advocate and prosecutor, which always makes those books even more depressing.

But if the point is to register a complaint or a suggestion with someone who can do something about it, the comment section of random article on one of the sites isn't really effective. I know people need to blow steam about the situations, I do. But these complaints (and I probably just see them more often than the

Thanks! I always mean to tell you how much I like your screenname, so I guess this is as good of a time as any. :)

I believe editors and writers have access to the same moderating functions, as does the help desk crowd.

I do agree that there's a lot more aggression around these days. I think part of it is the loosening of things with Kinja, and also a general influx of 'new' commenters to the site, who I think are just used to a generally different tone on different websites than what we strive for here. Also, some of them are

It wouldn't have been from me and I don't see any reports about it on trollpatrol. I can't give you an answer on why they were removed, but it could have been a mistake.

Thanks for the offer!

Sorry for the second response — if you wish to register a complaint about Kinja with Gawker, it would be better to email them directly. The people who are actually active in designing Kinja are likely not involved in reading every comment section across all the sites.

Part of the introduction of Kinja was the explicit reduction in the amount of bans on Gawker sites. Because accounts are now active Gawker-wide, bans are rare and on a case by case basis.

We link it in almost every single comment section and its included in every commenting guide to Jezebel. It has been active for years at this point.

You would have to discuss this with the employees of Gawker proper. That is nothing I can control or influence.

We do allow some problematic comments to remain if the conversation around them is instructive or insightful, or in some cases, just a really good take down. Generally we don't remove comments that are critical of an article unless they are abusive (like 'you're so fucking stupid and so is this article') — so I'd have

The moderators go through every thread on this site multiple times a day. We're all volunteers, so we're not hovering over our keyboards when a new article goes up — this is why we have trollpatrol, where commenters can leave us links to problematic conversations. If you see something offensive, its a lot quicker to

According to the transcript, the mother did know, and the daughter alluded to this before saying she'd been raped.

We have moderators. We've been working since before Kinja.

You beat me to it!

Sorry, I'm just seeing this comment now. I can't speak to if they'd do a post like this or not, but check out the trollpatrol forum. Sometimes its just links, but we'll occasionally get copy and pasted notes about horrible messages people receive here. Some of them are really awful.

You're totally welcome!
