I have used the $20 trick twice, once in Las Vegas, and once at Foxwoods in CT (both casino-hotels, for what it’s worth). In Vegas, I got upgraded to a top floor suite (the “suite” was marginally better than a regular room, but it was nice! and quiet! and a great view! I had originally booked the cheapest room option)
