Seems like that skid plate under the front of the engine would see a lot of action and end up scooping sand or getting ripped off in short order.

A different site is reporting that the transfer case will be switchable to RWD mode for all the fun.

Friend of mine’s dad had a nearly identical Unimog 411 when I was in high school (in similar condition). It was a lot of fun to drive around their property. We also filmed an Indiana Jones knockoff movie which included Indy falling off the front bumper and being dragged underneath when his whip caught the front end.

Without knowing the specifics on what this instrument endured, I have no idea why the Torq-set screws didn’t work as intended. It could be as simple as a person using the wrong bit in the extraction tool, a bit worn during installation, or lacking the ability to push down hard enough on the extraction too to prevent…

So some guy got his truck stuck in the mud.  Why is this a story?

Same here. I am a mechanical engineer and just finished designing, building, and shipping something headed for space. I used mostly Torx-Plus fasteners in my design.

Those are Torq-Set screws, not Phillips.  The drive walls of the cruciform are smaller in area than the removal walls, increasing the likelihood you can remove the fastener without stripping it out (which clearly failed here).

When we are relying to passengers to spot deficiencies in the aircraft, we’ve already lost.

That was the most effective way to quickly remove the blue car from the fire hydrant AND the electrical box all in one shot.  Well-done!
