They were originally designed to keep up motorsports dealer sales during the winter when bike sales were low and are evolved from dirt bike designs. Bear in mind that these came out before 4-wheel ATVs were really a thing.

My 1.5L EcoBoost (2018 Fusion) blew a head gasket at 20k miles (even after it was brought in under a Customer Satisfaction Program to make changes to avoid the issue). This was after Ford had all the trouble with their 2.0L EcoBoost doing the same thing in previous years. That will be my last Ford product.
