Also, what’s holding down that battery?

“You have a gator in your lot.”
That early 2000s dash in there among all the rest of that 60s interior... UGH. That alone ruins this car for me.
Old friend of mine had a Beetle with a 130hp Subaru engine in it and it’d pop wheelies at the drop of a hat. This thing’s gotta be batshit insane with a fiberglas body and a 200hp Subaru engine.
I love the (presumably dead and rotting) doorless Bronco in the background. Seems appropriate for someone who wants almost $10k for a ‘78 Aspen.
This sounds like the title of a Tavarish article.
Actually that’s $2.91 adjusted for inflation, so... yes.
Actually the one on BTTF was an xtra cab.
“Check out that 4x4 crack pipe!”
Needs more flames.
Ours fucking rocks and we plan to lift it. We took it offroading for the first time in December (unplanned, Christmas tree farm was having a gas pipeline installed across it and road was closed to all but 4x4s) and were really impressed at how it handled the deep ruts and loose, sloppy mud.
Yep, they’re pretty easy on Subarus of that vintage. Rear driveshaft is the slip-in type and is in two pieces. Remove the carrier (two bolts) and it slides right out the back of the transmission. Front half shafts slip on over stub axles on the sides of the transmission. Drive out the retainer pins with a 3/16" pin…
And no worries about the clutch. These things are super freaking easy to take apart thanks to their longitudinal powertrain layout. 3 hour job if you’re familiar with Subarus, 5 hour job if you’re not.
Easy peasy. I can do (and have done) the job in 3 hours with no lift and hand tools.
Hmmm. We must've missed each other then. I think I would've remembered that.
I hit the pine barrens twice back in the day. Might have met you! First time was in a stock white 87 DL wagon with white hubcaps, second time was in a red 87 GL dual range wagon with a small lift, 27” tires, and a huge crumpled area over the right rear wheel.
I used to be. Don't own any Subarus anymore. Bought my 87 XT from Moosens actually, is he still around?
I had one of those too. And a 1987 XT 4WD turbo. And a 1988 XT DL, stripped to the bones 5-speed, no A/C, not even a back seat.
Brilliant idea, but the technology of the time wasn’t sophisticated enough to reliably handle the engineers’ demands. Hence, their electrical systems broke. A lot.
Subaru XT. Funky styling, super aerodynamic (one of the slickest of the time actually), lots of innovative features such as height adjustable suspension, digital dash, tilt/telescopic steering column with gauges that moved along with the steering wheel, electric power steering pump, and of course turbo and AWD.
