maybe if you are parachuting down you could see one in the distance and hope to point your chute toward it? or if you still maybe had some control of your plane as it was going down you could do the same? but yeah, i would be curious to know how many airmen were actually rescued from these things. 

Both the Nazis and the British made a point of rescuing - or capturing - downed pilots bobbing around dinghies, after ending up in the Channel or the North Sea. Mainly they used boats for this, but seaplanes too.

Most airmen would not be interested in gunning for a rescue boat/buoy as a matter of principle. Shooting enemy pilots like ducks in the water wouldn’t be sporting for either side. Completely agreed. She died in what was unequivocally THE safest car in the world, because she didn’t put her seatbelt on. Sad.
