Is there no way around the region lock? Are all games region locked, or just some?

That $50 left me with a lot of fun memories and great friends. Now that it's free, I hope the same for many more people.

Assuming $14(ish) fee and a $50 buy-in cost, longtime customers invested about $1400 over the last 8 years. You know what? Though I've never played this game (and don't really do MMO's), if someone came up to me and said, "Would you like 8 years of solid entertainment for $1400?", I'd probably say yes.
