It’s not really hindsight, when everyone knows taking kickers and punters that high in the draft is piss poor value. As great as any kicker or punter is, the number of times where their skill advantages over average players at their position will make a difference in a game is going to be significantly less than a

They released him after one year? I guess he must have been atrocious in training camp or something.

How many games will Jerry Jones be suspended for his attempt to intimidate and interfere with the league’s DV advisor and investigation?

I disagree. I think a jersey with just the name “Bill” on the back is fantastic.

Doris Burke is awesome. It’s super rare for a broadcaster to be as universally well-regarded as she is. She’s got a great voice, a real feel for the game and not overshadowing the action, and that pleasant demeanor that you’re happy to have in your home via the TV.

One change I’d like to see made is to get rid of all the extra off days in the playoffs. It always seemed crazy to me that teams would have 4 games in 5 day stretches during the regular season, but that there would sometimes be 4 or 5 off days between games in a playoff series.

His homeruns are unreal. Majestic. I can’t remember the last time I saw batting practice before a game, but the next time the Marlins come to San Francisco (or Oakland), I am getting there nice and early.

The comment is actually kind of a nice, humanizing detail for both men. Interesting that this would get him suspended and not all the ump show bullshit. If this is something worthy of a suspension, I surely hope they suspend Angel Hernandez for taking off his mask and trying to start shit with JA Happ recently. They

Yeah, even though I am a Giants fan from the Bay Area, I really enjoyed that Phillies team. As a little league catcher at the time, I really liked Darren Daulton. He was sort of the quintessential gritty, tough guy catcher. Very good player. RIP

Yeah, I remember him mostly as the manager and coach, and all-around, respected baseball man. He was a guy the ex-player broadcasters always talked about with a bit of reverence, so I always knew he was a pretty decent player before getting into coaching.

Good point. If he is saying over-the-line, abusive, obscene comments to players, you can be sure that fan is making things shitty for the people sitting around him too. Just point him out to security. I think there’s a pretty clear line where normal shit talk and jeering crosses a line and becomes abusive, and no,

This seems like a good, honest apology.

I really prefer him as a dose of instant energy and offense off the bench. He’s so valuable in that role. He really did great things for the Warriors last year, ad I’m thrilled he’s coming back. I fully expected him to get a (very well deserved) big deal somewhere else.

I don’t entirely know how schools should handle DV or sexual assault claims, but man, it sure appears as if they’re unequipped to do so, whether they’re sweeping it under the rug (Baylor, FSU, MSU) or aggressively prosecuting a case like this where there is no victim. Are the people conducting these Title IX

Great piece.

Hmmm... KG was probably the best player on the 2008 Celtics, but Pierce was the leading scorer, right? It’s still an interesting point, though, because it usually does work that way in the recent past.

So, first of all, analytics are generally very good and have led to a lot of positive developments in the NBA. And I am in no way an expert on NBA analytics so the following is just my semi-informed opinion.

What I remember most about him from that time were his predatory throws to first base behind runners who got a bit too casual with their leadoffs. Goddamn, those runners never knew what hit them.

So glad he made it in on the first try. I played catcher as a kid and Pudge was someone I looked up to. I wanted to be the guy with the cannon arm who put fear into baserunners’ hearts, too!

Well, in Boston’s defense, that was sort of Year 1 for the amazing second half to his career. He’d been coming off some mediocre-to-decent seasons, and seemed like he was pretty well locked in as a low OBP guy who can sock you some dingers and play good defense. Boston probably figured that great season was likely to
