Guns are not as accurate as you seem to think they are, espcially handguns. You can be incredibly close to a person and still miss.

The only information that shows having a gun in your home is more likely to get you killed is a biased study which included gang members. There are plenty of people who have defended themselves with guns without having to kill their attackers, although gun control advocates like to downplay thier numbers.
